Bristol Stool Chart: All 7 Types Explained

The Bristol Stool Scale classifies stool into 7 types. Learn what each type means for your digestive health and which types indicate a healthy gut.

By PoopCheck Team

The Bristol Stool Scale is the most widely used clinical tool for classifying stool consistency. Developed at the Bristol Royal Infirmary by Dr. Ken Heaton and published in 1997, it categorizes stool into seven types based on shape and texture.

What is the Bristol Stool Scale?

The Bristol Stool Scale (also called the Bristol Stool Chart or Bristol Stool Form Scale) is a diagnostic medical tool designed to classify human stool into seven categories. It helps both patients and healthcare providers communicate about bowel habits using a standardized framework.

The 7 Bristol Stool Types

Type 1: Separate Hard Lumps

Small, hard, separate lumps that look like nuts or rabbit droppings. These are difficult to pass and indicate severe constipation. Stool has spent too long in the colon, and too much water has been absorbed.

What it means: Your stool has been in the colon for an extended period. Consider increasing water intake, fiber consumption, and physical activity.

Type 2: Lumpy and Sausage-Shaped

Sausage-shaped but lumpy on the surface. This still indicates constipation, though less severe than Type 1. The stool has been formed by compression in the colon.

What it means: Mild to moderate constipation. Dietary adjustments and increased hydration can help.

Type 3: Sausage-Shaped with Cracks

Like a sausage but with cracks on the surface. This is considered a normal, healthy stool type. Transit time through the colon is appropriate.

What it means: Healthy digestion. This type suggests good fiber intake and hydration.

Type 4: Smooth and Snake-Like

Smooth, soft, and snake-like or sausage-shaped. This is the ideal stool type — easy to pass and indicates optimal digestive function.

What it means: Your digestive system is working well. This is the gold standard for healthy bowel movements.

Type 5: Soft Blobs with Clear Edges

Soft blobs with clear-cut edges that pass easily. Slightly on the loose side but still within a normal range. This may indicate a slightly fast transit time.

What it means: Generally normal, but if frequent, you may want to increase fiber intake slightly.

Type 6: Mushy with Ragged Edges

Fluffy pieces with ragged edges, a mushy stool. This indicates mild diarrhea and a fast transit time through the colon.

What it means: Your stool is moving through the colon too quickly. This can be caused by stress, food intolerance, or infection.

Type 7: Entirely Liquid

Completely liquid with no solid pieces. This is diarrhea and indicates very rapid transit time. Water hasn’t been absorbed.

What it means: Acute diarrhea. Stay hydrated — ideally with an oral rehydration solution rather than water alone. If this persists for more than 48 hours, comes with blood, high fever, or severe pain, see our guide on diarrhea causes and when to worry and consult a clinician.

Which Types Are Healthy?

Types 3 and 4 are generally considered ideal. They indicate that food is moving through your digestive system at the right speed, with proper water absorption.

  • Types 1-2: Indicate constipation (too slow)
  • Types 3-4: Indicate healthy digestion (just right)
  • Types 5-7: Indicate diarrhea or loose stools (too fast)
