Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease affect roughly 3 million adults in the US alone. Treatment currently leans on immunosuppressants and biologics, which work but carry cost and infection risk. If a durable epigenetic reset of the gut lining is achievable in humans, it opens a door to shorter, more targeted therapy — potentially a course of butyrate or a butyrate-mimicking drug to trigger the state, rather than lifelong dosing.
The Northwestern press release makes clear this is still preclinical: everything shown so far is in mice. Human trials will need to confirm the same acetylpolyamine axis is at work, and that the epigenetic “memory” holds long enough to be therapeutically useful.

- Prioritise butyrate-friendly fibers. Oats, barley, cooked-and-cooled potatoes and rice (which raise resistant starch), green bananas, legumes, and cold pasta salad all feed butyrate producers.
